1st INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF PUPPET THEATERS “Klasyka Od-Nowa”

Będzin 19-23 April 2023


The main idea of the Festival is to promote Polish and international classical literature for the youngsters, and also modern dramaturgy. New reading of the classical literature by new texts (adaptations, authorial plays) based on classics, and also interesting staging conceptions aiming to draw young spectator close to the valuable literature in a fascinating way
The intention of the Festival is to search for performances which link classical literature, dramaturgy and modern plays. Reinventing authors from the past is supposed to bring a discussion about old-time literature, and also give it a new meaning. Classics can still remain an inspiration for modern Theatre creators, also give them a chance to explore the art of the puppetry. The aim of the Festival is to strengthen the theatrical dialogue with the past, search for new ways of interpreting classical literature for the young people, and also the design of the puppet theatre, also the initiation of the discussion about tradition, new dramaturgy and modern trends in the art of the puppetry in Poland and in the world.

''Peter Pan and Wendy''

Play presented by the Baj Theatre from Warsaw

Let’s leave everything and fly to the Neverland with the protagonists from the play ”Peter Pan and Wendy”, where new adventures, new friends, unknown emotions, first love (and probably some fairy or a crocodile, but it’s a secret for now) are waiting. Wendy, John and Michael are going to understand some things there. They will appreciate the importance of bedtime stories. They will experience true friendship. The three of them will open up each other to self experiences. They will find out the worth of cooperation. And willy-nilly…they will grow up.

''With the bull's head"

Play presented by the Puppet Theatre from Białystok

Michał, the main protagonist of the play, compares his life to the hero’s fortunes. He replaces situations and people from his past with the mythical figures. He plays the role of Theseus, trying to understand and tame the beast which has been living in his mind. He enters the maze of his own, slightly eerie everyday life with hope of finding the spring of the water of life, vitality and harmony.

''The Wizard of Oz''

Play presented by the Theatre of the Puppet and Actor from Wałbrzych

Performance based on the most famous American fairy tale by L.F. Baum, tells the story of Dorothy’s journey, girl living in Kansas, who thanks to the combination of events transfers from grey Kansas to the colorful, artificial and magic land of Oz. Wanting to find the way back home, Dorothy encounters both good and evil characters.

Dramaturgy workshops with Malina Prześluga

We invite everyone to take part in workshops devoted to the art of writing, everyone enamored with literature for young people, and also with the theatre stage where literature finds its forms, shapes, sounds and colours. During the workshops we are going to get to know authorial techniques of creating stories and designing theatre art. We will take the time to work with a figure of a protagonist, and by the written samples and creative tasks, we will get to grips with basic rules of writing for the theatre stage. We will get to know the exercises for using imagination during the creative process, and also find out how to effectively use our intuition.

''Maidens' Vows'' – performative reading

2023 is a great year to commemorate the most remarkable Polish comedy writer of Romanticism – Aleksander Fredro, because it is this year when the 230th anniversary of the writer’s birthday occurs. His – probably the most famous – comedy ”Maidens’ Vows” saw the light of the day in 1832, and originates from author’s miserable (however mutual!) love for married at that time Zofia Jabłonowska, whom family, and then spouse, did not give her permission for the divorce.
